RALEIGH — Former N.C. Lieutenant Governor Dennis A. Wicker, a partner in Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP's Raleigh office, will be honored at the 2016 Champions for Children Gala in April by the N.C. Foundation for Public School Children for his lifetime of service to education.

Wicker served as North Carolina's lieutenant governor in from 1993 until 2001. During those years he became the first statewide elected official to chair the State Board of Community Colleges, which sets policy for the state's 58-campus system. In 2000, Wicker ran for N.C. governor with a platform focused on education and proposed a statewide scholarship program that would award funds to every high school student who graduated with a B- or better. In 2003, Wicker led the effort to create the Lee County Education Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of education in the county. The foundation initiated the Head of Class Project that has raised more than $1 million from local businesses. The project offers financial awards for each employee of the elementary school that ranked highest in improved student academic performance during the previous year.
