The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Scholarship was established in 1992 by the North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) Minority Affairs Commission under the auspices of the Human and Civil Rights Commission. Today it continues in partnership with the North Carolina Foundation for Public School Children.

Each year scholarships are awarded to North Carolina high school seniors who plan to attend college. Funds are distributed during the freshman year. The number of scholarships awarded are based on total funds received annually through donations and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr events.
